FOLLOWING ZANZIBAR I HAVE A FEW DAYS IN CAPE TOWN WAITING FOR THE OCEAN PRINCESS

View 2012 PRINCESS - CAPE TOWN TO DOVER & 2012 CAR - A TANZANIA SAFARI on hasbeen's travel map.

CAPE TOWN.....

I'VE HEARD PEOPLE CALL IT THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CITY IN THE WORLD

MIGHT WELL BE THE CASE.

BUT WE ARE NOT QUITE THERE YET.

THIS OVER AFRICA SOMEWHERE

large_P1110870.jpg

AND THE ONLY PHOTOGRAPH I HAVE OF JOHANNESBURG., OUTSIDE THE HOTEL.

IT IS IN GAUTENG I THINK. WHICH IS AN AMAZING COINCIDENCE BECAUSE I AM READING A BOOK RIGHT NOW WHERE THE CHARACTER IS FLYING TO GAUTENG.
IT'S A GOOD BOOK IF YOU LIKE DETECTIVE STUFF. TRANSLATED FROM AFRICAANS, ITS BY DEON MEYER. CALED SEVEN DAYS. HE HAS WRITTEN A LOT.

large_P1110873.jpg

SO - WHAT TO DO WITH A FEW DAYS IN CAPE TOWN

HAS TO BE TABLE MOUNTAIN

I CAN SEE THE MOUNTAIN FROM MY HOTEL BUT IT LOOKS CLOUDY SO I DECIDE NOT TO GO TODAY.

OUTSIDE THE HOTEL THERE IS A TAXI RANK & I CHANGE MY MIND, NEGOTIATE A PRICE WITH THE TAXI DRIVER AND OFF WE GO.

IT MIGHT HAVE ESCAPED YOUR NOTICE, BUT TABLE MOUNTAIN IS A MOUNTAIN.
THE CAB I AM IN IS OLD. IT CONKS OUT TWICE ON THE WAY BECAUSE THE GAS CANNOT REACH THE ENGINE ON THE INCLINE. THE THIRD TIME I GET OUT - WE ARE NOT GOING TO MAKE IT TO THE CABLE CAR.

I START WALKING, UP HILL OF COURSE. PASSING THIS ON THE WAY.

large_P1110890.jpg

I AM STILL A LONG WAY FROM THE CABLE CAR & SEE A SIGN SAYING IT IS CLOSED TODAY. AYE, CARAMBA?

THERE IS A TOURIST HUT AT THIS CAR PARK & THE GUIDE CONFIRMS THE CABLE CAR IS NOT GOING TODAY. I FORGET WHY. MECHANICAL? WEATHER. NOT UNUSUAL APPARENTLY.

STILL - A NICE SHOT OF CAPE TOWN SPREAD OUT BELOW. AND A WALK A LITTLE FURTHER ON..

large_P1110892.jpg

large_P1110895.jpglarge_P1110896.jpg

large_P1110897.jpg

THEN I BACK TRACK AND WALK BACK TO TOWN.

NOW WHAT TO DO?

THE BIG RED BUS SOUNDS INVITING AND AFTER WALKING UP & DOWN TABLE MOUNTAIN I WILL ENJOY A REST ON THE OPEN TOP BUS

THE BUS GOES TO HOUT BAY, PASSING SOME ROUGH AREAS....

large_P1110910.jpg

BUT THE BAY IS DELIGHTFUL..... I HOP OFF HERE FOR A VISIT,,

KIDS PLAYING ON THR BEACH

large_P1110922.jpg

A GIRL SURFING... WILL SHE MAKE IT ???????

large_P1110926.jpg

large_P1110929.jpglarge_P1110934.jpg

large_P1110937.jpg

WIPEOUT....

large_P1110938.jpg

large_P1110973.jpglarge_P1110978.jpg

large_P1110996.jpg

HERE SHE GOES AGAIN. WILL SHE MAKE IT THIS TIME?????

large_P1120015.jpg

large_P1120024.jpglarge_P1120027.jpg

THEN IT'S BACK ON THE BUS FOR THE RIDE BACK INTO CAPE TOWN.... BEACHES, BAYS, BAYS & BEACHES

large_P1120042.jpglarge_P1120045.jpg

large_P1120046.jpglarge_P1120057.jpg

large_P1120065.jpglarge_P1120075.jpg

large_P1120076.jpglarge_P1120090.jpg

large_P1120099.jpg

& BACK TO MY HOTEL, JUST THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROUNDABOUT.

large_P1120117.jpg

I SPENT THE EVENING WATCHING FOOTBALL ON TV IN THE HOTEL BAR.

I STRIKE UP A CONVERSATION WITH A TRADITIONALLY BUILT YOUNG LADY. SHE SHOWS A GOLD TOOTH WHEN SHE SMILES & I ASK IF SHE MINED IT HERSELF. WE CHAT FOR A LONG TIME. WATCH THE FOOTBALL. LISTEN TO STUFF GOING ON AROUND THE BAR.
THEN SHE ASKS, QUITE POLITELY, IF I WOULD LIKE SOME COMPANY & THE PENNY DROPS..

I DECLINE.

SHE'S PERFECTLY PLEASANT. SAYS GOODBYE & LEAVES. THE RECEPTION GUY NODS TO ME.

HOT & COLD RUNNING HOOKERS IN THIS HOTEL. A NEW ONE ON ME.

THATS ENOUGH FOR ONE DAY.

2012 - OCEAN PRINCESS - CAPE of GOOD HOPE

ROUND CHAPMANS PEAK, ON TO CAPE POINT AND BOULDERS BEACH FOR MORE PENGUINS AND FINISH AT THE BOTANICAL GARDENS

View 2012 PRINCESS - CAPE TOWN TO DOVER & 2012 CAR - A TANZANIA SAFARI on hasbeen's travel map.

THIS WAS A BLUSTERY DAY OUT WITH ONE OF THE BEST GUIDES EVER ON A TOUR. PERFECT PACE, GREAT DIRECTIONS & KEPT US ALL ON TIME. THERE IS NOTHING WORSE ON A TOUR THAN WAITING ON A TOUR BUS FOR THAT TOURIST TO BE LATE GETTING BACK ON - AGAIN!

STARTED OUT FROM CAPE TOWN & HEADED SOUTH TOWARDS THE CAPE.

large_P1120118.jpglarge_P1120121.jpg

PASS A BEACH & A SEAL OR TWO. THE SIGN SAYS DOLPHIN BUT THAT IS A SEAL....

large_P1120123.jpg

THIS INVOLVES A RIDE ALONG THE SPECTACULAR CHAPMANS PEAK ROAD OVERLOOKING THE OCEAN..

large_P1120125.jpg

large_P1120127.jpglarge_P1120130.jpg

large_P1120133.jpg

THE PEE BREAK IS AT A STORE SELLING LOTS & LOTS OF CARVINGS,,,,

large_P1120134.jpg

large_P1120136.jpg

A TROOP OF BABOONS ALONG THE ROAD. ONE HAS A BABY ON HER BACK....

large_P1120141.jpg

large_P1120143.jpg

ANOTHER STOP AT AN OSTRICH FARM.....

large_P1120156.jpg

AND WE GET OT THE CAPE & I AM GLAD I HAVE MY EAR MUFFS TODAY....

large_D21A29992219AC681713D82167D4B3A9.jpg

I EXPECT MOST PEOPLE, IF THEY THINK ABOUT IT AT ALL, THINK THE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE IS THE SOUTHERN MOST POINT IN AFRICA.
NOT SO.
AND IT'S ALSO NOT SO, THAT CAPE POINT WHICH IS RIGHT NEXT DOOR & UP THE HILL A BIT, IS EITHER.

IT'S CAPE AGULHAS - A WAYS AWAY TO THE EAST OF HERE. I SHOULD HAVE GONE THERE BUT WILL GO ROUND IT IN A SHIP IN A YEAR OR TWO, SO NO MATTER.

large_P1120173.jpglarge_P1120175.jpg

large_P1120192.jpglarge_P1120195.jpg

THIS IS CAPE POINT....

large_P1120196.jpglarge_P1120198.jpg

large_P1120199.jpglarge_P1120203.jpg

WE HAD TIME FOR A SANDWICH HERE. I SAT ON A BENCH, OUT OF THE WIND. LOTS OF THESE BIRDS CAME TO LOOK AT ME. MORE AND MORE. THEN ONE OF THEM JUMPED FROM BEHIND AND SNATCHED MY SANDWICH RIGHT OUT OF MY HAND.

SCARED THE BEJESUS OUT OF ME. THESE WOULD TOO....

large_P1120205.jpg

THE GUIDE HAD WARNED US TO KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR BABOONS WHICH CAN BE VERY AGGRESSIVE, BUT NEVER MENTIONED THE BIRDS...

large_P1120206.jpg

I HAD TAKEN THIS LITTLE FUNICULAR ON THE WAY UP TO THE LIGHTHOUSE & WALKED BACK DOWN

large_P1120209.jpglarge_P1120210.jpg

THEN IT WAS TIME TO SEE THE PENGUINS AT BOULDERS BEACH.

HANDS UP. WHO KNEW THERE WERE PENGUINS IN AFRICA.

large_P1120236.jpglarge_P1120238.jpg

large_P1120240.jpg

BOULDERS?

AT BOULDERS BEACH....

AND A STOP AT THE LOVELY BOTANICAL GARDEN BEHIND TABLE MOUNTAIN.

View 2012 PRINCESS - CAPE TOWN TO DOVER & 2012 CAR - A TANZANIA SAFARI on hasbeen's travel map.

A TOUR OF SOME WINERIES

THREE MAYBE - IT'S A BIT FUZZY

THIS IS ONE....VERY NICE.

MUST BE SOME SERIOUS CASH IN THE WINE BUSINESS...

large_P1120277.jpglarge_P1120278.jpg

large_P1120281.jpglarge_P1120284.jpg

SLAG GATE!!

WHATEVER IS THAT?

THEY WOULD GET PROSECUTED FOR THAT IN THE UK...

large_P1120286.jpg

THIS TOUR WAS NOT JUST WINERIES. WE STOPPED AT A COUPLE OF LITTLE TOWNS & INSIDE A LITTLE MUSEUM.. AND A BONSAI SHOP...

large_P1120289.jpg

large_P1120292.jpglarge_P1120302.jpg

large_P1120303.jpglarge_P1120304.jpg

AS YOU CAN SEE, IT WAS A WET & WINDY DAY, BUT A NICE SENTIMENT ON THE VAN

WE ACTUALLY SKIPPED A SCHEDULED STOP AS IT WAS JUST TOO WET TO GET OUT OF THE VAN...

large_P1120318.jpg

SO - WE HAD TO SPEND A BIT MORE TIME IN SAMPLING.

large_P1120322.jpg

large_P1120329.jpg

AT ONE OF THE TASTINGS WE HAD THREE WINES TO TASTE & COMBINE THEM WITH CHOCOLATE.

TASTE A WHITE WINE - PUT A PIECE OF WHITE CHOCOLATE IN THE MOUTH - ADD WINE.

REPEAT WITH BLUSH WINE & STRAWBERRY CHOCOLATE,

AND ETC.

VERY INTERESTING - TRY IT...

large_P1120331.jpg

large_P1120332.jpg

THIS IS THE GROUP, NOT TOO SOZZLED YET.

GOING ROUND THE TABLE TO THE RIGHT.

A LADY FROM CALIFORNIA. SHE IS ABOUT TO SET OUT ON A MASSIVE JOURNEY FROM HERE TO KENYA OR THERE ABOUTS. STAYING IN TENTS. SAFARIS. BY HERSELF - VERY ADVENTUROUS.
SHE TOOK PHOTOS OF ANYTHING. THE INSIDE OF HER GLASS WAS ONE.

NEXT AN ENGLISH COUPLE AND A BRAZILIAN COUPLE - AND ME.

ANOTHER ENGLISH COUPLE ABOUT TO GO TO THE MALDIVES TO GET MARRIED.

I HARDLY DRINK SO I WAS HAVING A SIP TO TASTE & THE GUY WAS GETTING THE BALANCE. PLUS HIS WIFE'S. PLUS HIS OWN.
WE ROLLED HIM OFF THE VAN AT HIS HOTEL.
HOPE HE MADE IT TO THE WEDDING.

AND AN IRISH GIRL WHO AMAZINGLY ENOUGH WAS DOING THE SAME TRIP AS THE CALIFORNIAN BUT ONLY A QUARTER OF THE DISTANCE OR LESS.

A GOOD CROWD.

large_P1120334.jpg

AND THE DRIVE BACK TO CAPE TOWN WITH SOME UNUSUAL VIEWS OF ABLE MOUNTAIN

large_P1120346.jpglarge_P1120351.jpg

large_P1120361.jpg

THE 'BRIDAL VEIL' FALLS ON THE MOUNTAIN OFTEN AT AROUND THIS TIME OF DAY.

ANYTIME SOON, I SHOULD BE GETTING ON MY BOAT. IT'S BEEN A LONG TIME GETTING TO HERE..

2012 - OCEAN PRINCESS - TABLE MOUNTAIN

TO THE TOP OF THE HILL

View 2012 PRINCESS - CAPE TOWN TO DOVER & 2012 CAR - A TANZANIA SAFARI on hasbeen's travel map.

STILL NOT TIME FOR THE BOAT RIDE

SO - IT HAS TO BE ANOTHER TRY FOR THE TOP OF TABLE MOUNTAIN

SEE THE LITTLE BIT OF SOMETHING STICKING OUT AT THE TOP RIGHT?

THAT'S THE CABLE CAR STOP......

large_P1120367.jpg

NO TAXI THIS TIME.

I HAD FOUND OUT THAT THE BIG RED BUS STOPS AT THE CABLE CAR & THEN CONTINUES ON IT'S LOOP. THIS I A GREAT DEAL.

I MET TWO GIRLS FROM MONTREAL ON MY OTHER BIG RED BUS TRIP & THEY ARE ON THIS ONE AS WELL. QUEL SURPRISE!

THE BIG RED BUS WENDS IT'S WAY THROUGH CAPE TOWN. I THINK THIS IS A PART OF THE CAPE MALAY AREA..

large_P1120372.jpg

AND THIS LOOKS FAMILIAR....

large_P1120374.jpg

THE CABLE CAR ITSELF, ROTATES AS IT GOES UP. NOW THAT IS A GREAT IDEA. EVERYONE GETS A VIEW.

large_P1120386.jpg

large_P1120391.jpglarge_P1120393.jpg

large_P1120395.jpg

RIGHT AT THE TOP & THE CLOUDS ROLL IN. MIGHT BE RAINING TOO OR JUST BECAUSE I AM ACTUALLY IN THE CLOUD.

large_P1120398.jpg

large_P1120399.jpglarge_P1120401.jpg

I WAS NOT DRESSED FOR THE WEATHER UP THERE, SO I HAD A QUICK STROLL AROUND THE TOP & HEADED FOR THE BUS...

large_P1120410.jpglarge_P1120431.jpg

large_P1120433.jpg

CAPE TOWN IS RENOWNED FOR IT'S BEAUTIFUL SCENERY BUT THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING GETTING IN THE WAY

I WAS TOLD BY A LOCAL THAT THIS STUFF IS SOME SORT OF ALGAL BLOOM. UGLY & I WOULD NOT WANT TO SWIM IN THAT. WALK ON IT MAYBE....

large_P1120435.jpg

large_P1120436.jpglarge_P1120437.jpg

large_P1120443.jpglarge_P1120444.jpg

large_P1120447.jpglarge_P1120451.jpg

large_P1120459.jpg

AFTER THAT WALK AROUND THE WATERFRONT I DECIDE TO TAKE A SAIL OUT ON THE OCEAN.

THERE WERE ONLY THREE OF US PLUS THREE CREW SO THEY ARE NOT GETTING RICH TODAY.

MORE OF THE ALGEA... THE SEA ALSO HAD A SLIGHT RED TINGE. MORE ALGEA..

large_P1120468.jpg

FOR LUNCH I HEAD TO A RESTAURANT I HAD HEARD OF THAT SERVES LOCAL FOOD.

TOO BAD IT DOES NOT OPEN FOR LUNCH.

BUT - THERE IS SOME STAFF THERE & THEY OPEN UP FOR ME....

large_P1120475.jpglarge_P1120480.jpg

AND WONDER OF WONDERS, I AM FINALY ON BOARD MY SHIP - THE OCEAN PRINCESS.

ON HIS KNEES IS STUART WHO IS DESTINED TO BE ON MY DINER TABLE & STANDING IS ONE OF THE BEAUTIFUL MEMBERS OF STAFF. THIS BOAT HAS A SURFEIT OF THOSE...

THEY DO LOOK A TRIFLE ODD BUT I THINK THERE IS A BUG ON THE DECK THERE..

2013 - OCEANIA - CAPE TOWN

Still not on the cruise yet, Cape Town to explore again

View 2013 OCEANIA - CAPE TOWN TO SINGAPORE on hasbeen's travel map.

CAPE TOWN...

P1010542.jpg

Since I had only been on Cape Town the prior May & had done most of the tourist stuff, I decided on a tour to the Townships. These being areas set up during apartheid for the various races & are what I understood to be slums. A little scary considering their reputation, but this is not Johannesburg.
There were only 6 of us including the guide. A young Swedish guy & a German couple with a young girl of maybe 8 or 9. Hey, if she can do it, so can I.

We started in the Cape Malay area which I had been through before & not realised it. Very close to downtown. Houses are very colourful & not in the least what I expected & not a slum by any means. This is where the coloureds lived & still do live.
Next up was District 6 where there are no buildings as it has all been razed to the ground. I still don’t know the significance of this area or what is going to happen to it but it was probably for blacks at one time. A lot of expensive real estate not being used.
We visited a center where people are taught to teach people various crafts. Pottery, painting etc.

P1010546.jpg

There was a room where a couple of kids were drumming on bongo type drums & we all got to sit down while the teacher showed us how to beat them ( the drums that is ). Before we knew what was happening we were beating out a tune. Great fun but very hard on the hands.
Lots of good looking stuff for sale & we were meeting the artists whose work it was.

Then went to visit inside a house in a blacks area. Not much different to a poor house in England.

P1010549.jpg

We all trooped in where there was a very shy young lady doing the dishes at the sink. Hopefully she must get a few dollars from our tour guide.

This is the Swedish guy & the guide. Nice door - I had one like that in England. The top opens independently to the bottom - "to let peoples smles in & their bodies out".

large_P1010547.jpg

There was a funeral going on across the road for what must have been a very well respected lady  nurse, who’s photo was all over the place. On telephone polls, in the back of cars, etc. All the attendees looking a little overdressed in suits.

Last we went to more of a slum.  This is the German lady looking a little grumpy.

large_P1010552.jpg

The guide dropped us off with another guy who then walked us down the road passing portable toilets like you see at rock concerts. & water taps with people washing themselves & pots & pans. Some of the faucets are missing of course as they are worth cash to someone. We carried on walking and around the block. It was funny seeing the reactions of young black girls on the street to our young girl. They check her out & her clothes & she peeps from behind her mom, checking them out.
We then got to the guides house...

large_P1010553.jpg

& went inside where we were in illustrious company. A photo on the wall of him with Laura Bush...

large_P1010554.jpg

Right next to the wires & under the corrugated iron ceiling.

large_P1010555.jpg

His house is a good 50  yards from his port-a-cabin toilet that we had passed earlier.

He told the story of when apartheid ended, they were told they were going to build 5 million houses in 5 years when what happens is they are building 5 houses in 5 million years. He has been on a housing list for a move for over 20 years & never expects to move. Various levels of housing are very close together but it is going to be a long time before they get anywhere near a decent level. End of tour & I still did not see anything approaching what I was expecting  but the areas cover miles on the Cape flats behind Table Mountain .

large_P1010559.jpg

large_P1010562.jpg

& we probably did not get shown the really bad areas.

Not scary at all, unlike Brixton. You read so much. I have been on Johannesburg twice now but never did get to Soweto ( stands for South Western Township - very Zulu ) which is the famous black township there. Maybe next time.
An interesting tour & one I would recommend & would do again if I went back.

Spent the rest of the day shopping & wandering around the V&A waterfront which is where the ship was docked & on another planet. Its a bit like the shopping center in Portsmouth, only hotter. & you don't expect Indian chiefs.

P1010565.jpg

P1010568.jpgP1010574.jpgP1010578.jpg

Next I actually start the cruise & head round the Cape of Good Hope to Durban.

2013 - OCEANIA - EAST LONDON & DURBAN

I lied

View 2013 OCEANIA - CAPE TOWN TO SINGAPORE on hasbeen's travel map.

Actually I lied. It’s East London up next, not Durban. First day was at sea & we rounded the Cape of Good Hope at night so no photos  of it from the ship but this was in May. You will just have to imagine the ship floating past over my shoulder..Note the ear muffs, it was a tad windy.

P1120165.jpg

and a few more from May of Table Mountain..

P1120488__1_.jpg16ABDD2B2219AC6817ED56639A882F05.jpglarge_P1120516.jpg

Inkenkwezi Safari park

is where I’m heading today.

P1010590.jpgP1010599.jpg

Botswana it’s not. There are 3 elephants here. Chobe park had 68 thousand. Anyway it should be a nice ride out into the countryside which it was & there were a few animals including a couple of Rhino way off in the distance, Giraffe various antelope & some white lions.

]P1010621.jpgP1010625.jpglarge_P1010645.jpglarge_P1010646.jpgP1010690.jpg

You have to drive into a separate enclosure to get to the lions so whereas they could eat us, they cannot eat the other animals. Not that they showed the least inclination to eat us although I could have fed them an obnoxious American couple who were in my van.

177036882219AC6817221D815CD26CB0.jpg177139342219AC6817812F10BBA28F06.jpg1771F5FB2219AC6817F0F29B3046D2F5.jpg1772C67E2219AC681720FBD19996BD37.jpg177378F12219AC6817BC1EA7016710F9.jpg1776260F2219AC681731175092EB4F9B.jpglarge_P1010706.jpg

Durban is the next port

it’s off to see some Zulu & maybe some naked ladies. Durban has quite the spectacular setting. Lovely hill views on the way out of the city & a parade in town for the upcoming African cup of nations football competition.

large_P1010724.jpglarge_P1010730.jpglarge_P1010734.jpg

The Zulu village was totally fake with not a sign of Michael Cain anywhere but good fun nevertheless with the drumming & guys jumping around.

large_P1010750.jpgP1010758.jpg

P1010760.jpg

And the Zulu girls must be getting plenty to eat. A nice missionary hot pot maybe, with salad & some fava beans. Not only are they not topless you can just make out the Lycra leggings under their skirts.

large_P1010764.jpg
large_P1010765.jpgP1010774.jpgP1010775.jpgP1010776.jpgP1010777.jpgP1010778.jpgP1010779.jpglarge_P1010792.jpglarge_P1010793.jpg

There was also a little tour to see Crocodiles in concrete pools. Not too awesome.

P1010801.jpglarge_P1010805.jpglarge_P1010809.jpgP1010824.jpg

And a very welcome cold drink at a lovely little bar attached to the Crocodile place

large_P1010828.jpg

In the evening, Sandy & I went to the beach

large_P1010843.jpg

& a restaurant in a beached cargo ship

large_P1010841.jpg

where they have chopped the hold in half. One side is the restaurant & the other they filled with water & fish. Fish for my meal too of course.

large_P1010850.jpgP1010859.jpgP1010870.jpg

anyway - that's enough excitement for one day.

Richards bay up tomorrow. Still South Africa.

And - did you glimpse the naked lady? You have to have very good eyes.
