THE SUN COMIMG UP ON KUSADASI - TURKEY

TRAVEL BOOKS DO NOT GIVE VERY GOOD REVIEWS OF KUSADASI. I DON’T KNOW WHY. I QUITE LIKED IT.

SHOPKEEPERS TRY SELLING THEIR CARPETS BUT IN A FRIENDLY WAY & PASS ME ON TO THEIR NEIGHBOUR WHEN THEY KNOW I WILL NOT BUY.

large_P1070405.jpglarge_P1070407.jpg

I LEAVE THE SHIP WITH THE INTENTION OF WALKING TO THIS ISLAND WITH A CASTLE..

large_P1070423.jpglarge_P1070424.jpg

ROSE & JANE FROM THE SHIP HAVE ALSO REACHED THE CASTLE....

large_P1070428.jpg

JANE AND I SPENT A LOT OF TIME CHATTING ON THE PROMENADE DECK ABOUT NOTHING IN PARTICULAR.
SHE IS ALSO FROM ONTARIO & IT SEEMS SHE TOOK THE ROUND THE WORLD CRUISE ON A WHIM & HAS BEEN WANTING TO GET OFF SINCE THE SECOND DAY.

TOO BAD - SHE HAS OVER A MONTH TO GO.

A NICE LADY WHO SHOULD READ ITINERARIES.

large_P1070437.jpg

large_EA16E8412219AC6817565A05EEDFF79E.jpg

THERE IS SOME LOVELY COASTLINE NEARBY.....

I FORGET THE STORY BUT THERE ARE THESE PEBBLE LIKE OBJECTS EMBEDDED IN THE GROUND ALL AROUND HERE.

large_P1070444.jpglarge_P1070450.jpg

I TAKE TEA AT THE BEACH & CHAT TO A WAITER ABOUT HIS COUSIN WHO LIVES IN TORONTO, THEN TAKE A BUS BACK TO TOWN & A WALK UP THROUGH THE BACK STREETS.

large_P1070463.jpglarge_P1070468.jpg

large_P1070472.jpg

I ASKED THIS LADY IF IT WAS OK TO TAKE HER PHOTO & ONLY AFTER I HAD CLICKED THE SHUTTER DID SHE ASK FOR CASH.

EASY MONEY.

large_P1070471.jpg

SOME NICE FLOWERS & OLD BUILDINGS.

large_P1070483.jpglarge_P1070486.jpg

large_P1070487.jpg

large_EA528AE72219AC68170EA4E35C69355F.jpg

NOBODY TAKING ANY NOTICE OF ME UNTIL SOME SCHOOL GIRLS TRIED TO ENTICE ME UP AN EXTREMELY STEEP STREET. SAYING - ‘ATATURK’ & BECKONONG ME UP THE HILL.
I HAD NO IDEA WHAT THEY WERE UP TO & THE HILL WAS VERY STEEP SO I WENT DOWN HILL INSTEAD.

large_P1070497.jpglarge_P1070507.jpg

YOU CAN SEE THE SHIP BETWEEN THE HOUSES.

large_P1070510.jpglarge_P1070515.jpg

I SPENT SOME TIME SITTING WITH BAKI ( WHO COINCIDENTALLY, IS TURKISH BUT LIVES IN HAWAII . I MET HER AROUND DAY FIVE ON BOARD BUT HAVE BARELY SEEN HER SINCE ) ON DECK TAKING PHOTOS OF THE KITES FLYING AROUND THIS STATUE ON THE HILL.
IT’S THEN I REALISED WHAT THE GIRLS WANTED TO SHOW ME. THE STATUE OF ATATURK.

large_P1070529.jpglarge_P1070536.jpg

I HAVE BEEN WAITING AROUND FOR MY TOUR TO START.

AND HERE WE ARE AT EPHESUS WHERE THERE IS MORE ROMAN STUFF THAN IN ROME...VERY IMPRESSIVE, ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT..

large_P1070546.jpglarge_P1070550.jpg

CAMILLA & JIM WHO WERE NOT A COUPLE WHEN THEY BOARDED BUT MAY BE NOW. I NEVER DID WORK THAT ONE OUT.

large_P1070561.jpglarge_P1070567.jpg

large_P1070585.jpg

large_P1070590.jpglarge_P1070591.jpg

SOME ANCIENT TOILETS..

large_P1070595.jpglarge_P1070601.jpg

HARD TO SEE BUT THIS IS A STRING BAND WAITING TO PLAY A CONCERT FOR ANOTHER TOUR GROUP FROM MY SHIP...THAT MUST HAVE BEEN A BIT SPECIAL.

large_P1070606.jpglarge_P1070614.jpg

WE GET TWO DAYS HERE - A RARE OCCURRENCE & ESPECIALLY SO SINCE IT IS NOT A CHANGE OVER PORT.

I GAVE THE AUSSIE A TASTE & HE ALMOST SPAT IT OUT.

WON'T BE MISSING HIM WHEN I GET OFF.

2014 - AEGEAN ODYSSEY - ANTALYA, Turkey

Leaving Greece behind, I move on to Turkey - And also Asia..

Looks like a nice day .....

P1190819.jpgP1190821.jpg

large_P1190838.jpglarge_P1190842.jpg

large_P1190844.jpglarge_P1190847.jpg

Looks like Divo & maybe Nirvana performed here ....

large_P1190850.jpglarge_P1190853.jpg

There is a story behind these flowers that I might look up someday - something about it being a Death Plant..

large_P1190859.jpglarge_P1190861.jpg

large_P1190866.jpglarge_P1190878.jpg

Sheila from Oldham, now living in Wales - buying something. I bought some Pomegranate juice here & the lady gave me a tiny pin attached to the blue disc that protects against evil.

large_P1190884.jpglarge_P1190885.jpg

large_P1190888.jpglarge_P1190891.jpg

2014 - AEGEAN ODYSSEY - FETHIYE, Turkey

View 2014 VOYAGE TO ANTIQUITY - AEGEAN & BLACK SEA on hasbeen's travel map.

It's been a while now since the cruise started & I am into a nice relaxed routine.

Breakfast is either on the terrace or by the Lido pool.

Never the same food twice running. Fry up one day, Cold meat & cheese another. A muffin & Yoghurt. Lots of choices.

The Lido is a 'Healthy' version. Which means no fried stuff.

It should be a nice covered area but is incredibly noisy from the ships engines & it shakes. Not the best place to spend an evening, but ok for a quick bite. Tea & coffee are available all day here so I take a cup from here up one deck to the bar overlooking the pool. They charge 2.80 + 12.5% service for the same thing up there which is bizarre.

Anyway - today I am still in Turkey at Fethiye .... Who knew Turkey would be so beautiful?

large_P1190949.jpglarge_P1190956.jpg

This could be a Dolphin ....

large_P1190959.jpglarge_P1190965.jpg

Lots of Mosques in Turkey. More Mosques than schools.

large_P1190967.jpglarge_P1190969.jpg

There's the Dolphin again ....

large_P1190974.jpglarge_P1190982.jpg

The light is changing by the minute. Hardly anyone on deck taking photos ..

large_P1190986.jpglarge_P1190989.jpg

large_P1190991.jpglarge_P1190992.jpg

The tour today is going to take in these buildings carved into the cliff face - Petra style ...

large_P1190993.jpglarge_P1190994.jpg

large_P1190998.jpglarge_P1190999.jpg

large_P1200001.jpglarge_P1200004.jpg

large_P1200012.jpg

I stopped into a shop for a snack & came out with a small package of what turned out to be chick pea flour made into little balls. People I offered a bite were a bit wary but it tasted ok to me.

The cat did not get any ...

large_P1200017.jpg

large_P1200021.jpglarge_P1200023.jpg

large_P1200028.jpglarge_P1200041.jpg

We have now arrived at a very strange place.

A ghost town ... Really.

The Turkish & Greek governments arranged a swap of their people. Turkish back to Turkey. Greeks to Greece.

The guide told us that this town, or at least the upper part of it became uninhabited because the incoming people did not want to live away from the flat lands or did not want to live in houses previously occupied.

My own guess is there were just less Turkish people coming back than Greeks leaving.

The empty houses can just be seen on the hillside in the glare from the sun ..

large_P1200042.jpglarge_P1200043.jpg

Pomegranates ...

Also notice how green it is. A marked contrast with Greece

large_P1200044.jpglarge_P1200045.jpg

large_P1200047.jpglarge_P1200053.jpg

large_P1200054.jpglarge_P1200055.jpg

After the ghost town, time for a pee break & a snack. Some sort of spinach pancake - quite tasty.

The hotel is run by a lady from Blackpool!

large_P1200056.jpglarge_P1200057.jpg

Nice pool.

We were scheduled to take a a few hours walking through the woods to the beach but the walkways had been washed away by a recent storm so we went by bus.

large_P1200067.jpglarge_P1200069.jpg

A nice looking beach but the attraction here ( apart from the topless tourists which was a surprise ) are the Hang-gliders..

Hundreds of them. Flying in from the top of the mountains. Landing all around us.

Looks like great fun

large_P1200074.jpg

And back to the ship.

Evenings are also getting a rhythm.

A drink before dinner at the bar above the pool. Hardly anyone visits here. Therese & Paul are regulars. Randy sometimes. Lovely to be able to sit out on deck

Dinner at eightish, out on the terrace at a table for eight where anyone joins in.

and we did actually have Turkey - in Turkey.

I only went to the more formal dining room twice for dinner.

After dinner, the music was pleasant for a few nights but sounds the same mostly every night. A duo or a threesome. I don't linger there much beyond a cup of tea.

There is a film on the big screen in the lounge most nights but I never saw one the whole way through.

I skip the lectures but do attend the odd excursion briefings as Jenny, the excursion girl is very informative, easy on the ear & very easy on the eye.

2014 - AEGEAN ODYSSEY - BODRUM, Turkey

View 2014 VOYAGE TO ANTIQUITY - AEGEAN & BLACK SEA on hasbeen's travel map.

Moving north, we arrive in Bodrum - where these two are bringing down the neighbourhood ......

Rumour has it that the boat in the background belongs to the owner of Chelsea FC & the one in the foreground belonged to someone he sued & who went bankrupt in the process.

True, who knows! Nice boats though.

Hard not to notice the helicopter.

The closest one has boats inside it. Like something out of James Bond.

large_P1200085.jpglarge_P1200086.jpg

Our tour this morning takes us into the castle, but on the way ...

we were promised a quick peek at the amphitheater & they did not lie.

I just managed this out of the bus.

large_P1200089.jpg

The bus drops us off at the top of the hill & we wander downhill to ....

large_P1200092.jpglarge_P1200095.jpg

the Mausoleum of Halicarnasus.

large_P1200099.jpglarge_P1200100.jpg

large_P1200102.jpglarge_P1200106.jpg

Phew! for a second there I thought it was a SacrifiCial deposit...

Seems they got legless in the old days too ...

large_P1200107.jpglarge_P1200109.jpg

large_P1200111.jpglarge_P1200112.jpg

Leaving the ruins, we carry on downhill to the harbour ....

large_P1200113.jpglarge_P1200117.jpg

and into the castle we saw from the ship.

large_P1200120.jpglarge_P1200121.jpg

some nicely presented glass pieces ...

large_P1200123.jpglarge_P1200129.jpg

and mosaics ..

Queen Neferititi - don't know what she is doing here. A long way from Egypt

large_P1200132.jpglarge_P1200133.jpg

Layla - one of the Excursion girls, taking in the coastal view ...

large_P1200138.jpglarge_P1200140.jpg

large_P1200141.jpglarge_P1200142.jpg

large_P1200145.jpglarge_P1200150.jpg

large_P1200151.jpglarge_P1200158.jpg

That was a nice mornings walk & now it's time for a few hours on a sailing ship whose type I forget. They are modern ships that look old & can be chartered from here for days at a time.

There were a lot of us on board so the price was a very reasonable 40 some dollars each..

Here we are leaving Jenny & the Aegean Odyssey behind ...

large_P1200159.jpglarge_P1200178.jpg

large_P1200179.jpglarge_P1200195.jpg

Lots of people up on the top deck ...

large_P1200196.jpglarge_P1200198.jpg

It was hard for me to even stand up on board but the captain strolls past the steering wheel & parks his glass of tea on the rail like he is on shore ..

large_P1200206.jpglarge_P1200209.jpg

We were out for about four hours, giving people ( but not me ) the opportunity to swim & snorkel

large_P1200210.jpglarge_P1200228.jpg

Some of the neighbours in the bay ...

And we passed this strange building on the way home. Looks like the whole building is the shutter. Very odd.

large_P1200244.jpglarge_P1200248.jpg

Back on board for sundowners with the very lovely, ever smiling Lorraine.

large_P1200250.jpglarge_P1200253.jpg

One day when it was very windy, her entire collection of signed receipts went flying all over the ship. Poor thing. Hope she didn't get into trouble for that. I expect not.

large_P1200264.jpglarge_P1200265.jpg

large_P1200270.jpg

and the sailing ship is called a Gulet ..

2014 - AEGEAN ODYSSEY - EPHESUS, Turkey

View 2014 VOYAGE TO ANTIQUITY - AEGEAN & BLACK SEA on hasbeen's travel map.

The last time I went to Ephesus, it was as the sun went down. Very atmospheric it was too.

This time it is during the day.

We are docked at Izmir, quite a long drive to Ephesus.. Passing what appears to be a a Tuborg brewery - in Turkey. Somewhat of a suprise

large_P1200275.jpg

Soon inside the site & a gentle downward slope .. The first theater ... plenty of room .

large_P1200295.jpglarge_P1200304.jpg

large_P1200306.jpglarge_P1200310.jpg

Lots of people here though ...

large_P1200313.jpglarge_P1200322.jpg

large_P1200323.jpglarge_P1200331.jpg

large_P1200333.jpglarge_P1200335.jpg

large_P1200338.jpglarge_P1200339.jpg

No prizes for guessing what that is ...

answer below ...

large_P1200341.jpglarge_P1200349.jpg

We are now inside an area that was no open last time I was here. It is a must see part of the site.

A giant jigsaw puzzle ...

large_P1200350.jpg

It's all up hill but it gets better the higher we go ...

large_P1200366.jpg

large_P1200368.jpglarge_P1200369.jpg

Like walking through an ancient village.

large_P1200370.jpglarge_P1200371.jpg

large_P1200374.jpglarge_P1200375.jpg

large_P1200378.jpglarge_P1200383.jpg

Outside again ... and a long way down again

large_P1200384.jpglarge_P1200391.jpg

Some people just cannot leave anything alone .... Doreen - bad girl!

large_P1200396.jpglarge_P1200399.jpg

Sorry - it's all Greek to me...

large_P1200400.jpglarge_P1200404.jpg

Nearly outside now, inside the larger theater.

One of the passengers sang a little opera here & got a hearty cheer from the nose-blees seats.

large_P1200407.jpglarge_P1200418.jpg

large_P1200420.jpglarge_P1200422.jpg

Lots of posers as is to be expected.

Here she is again in this one .. taken from the same spot

large_P1200427.jpg

Back to the ship at Izmir where we are parked overnight..

2014 - AEGEAN ODYSSEY - IZMIR, Turkey

Not sure what bird this is. I thought at the time it was a Pelican but don't think so now.

P1200448.jpgP1200451.jpg

Still parked in Izmir, today we head inland .... this lady was on the opposite side of the road to our pee break.

This is small ship cruising but the excursions are pretty much the same as a regular cruise. Thirty some people per bus & they all turn up at the pee break at the same time.

Long long lines for the ladies. Long lines for a drink or snack.

Our destination is - OH NO! An Acropolis but, a cable car. Heaven.

P1200452.jpg

And we are way up high this time ....

large_P1200454.jpg

Even after getting off the cable car there is still an uphill walk . Why did those people always put this stuff on top of a hill? How did they ever get up there?

large_P1200459.jpglarge_P1200460.jpg

large_P1200464.jpglarge_P1200465.jpg

But hows that for a Theater?

AMAZING! SAID TO BE THE STEEPEST ANYWHERE. I don't doubt it.

Imagine being an usher here.

Walking with a tray of ices, down hill, backwards.

large_P1200466.jpglarge_P1200467.jpg

large_P1200470.jpglarge_P1200472.jpg

The guide said we could walk down the theater if we wanted.

After you Gunga DIn ....

large_P1200475.jpglarge_P1200479.jpg

large_P1200481.jpgP1200487.jpg

I don't know how a lady spotted this dung beetle rolling around ...

P1200490.jpglarge_P1200491.jpg

The dogs were much easier to spot.

Wonder what this means ....

P1200496.jpgP1200498.jpg

Heading down on the cable car now, a dam in the distance ...

This lady from Bulgaria was a bit nervous in our gondola. She thought there were too many people in it.

She looks ok now ...

large_P1200504.jpglarge_P1200530.jpg

Time for lunch. I am still with the Pink group. Should have been purple.

Lunch was good & then off through town ...

large_P1200535.jpglarge_P1200545.jpg

More ruins - A health spa now ... Aspendos maybe.

large_P1200546.jpglarge_P1200549.jpg

large_P1200550.jpglarge_P1200556.jpg

Angela taking it easy. I spent a lot of time with Angela & her husband John. Nice enough couple but hard to get a word in edgewise. Never mind.

large_P1200558.jpglarge_P1200561.jpg

large_P1200564.jpglarge_P1200565.jpg

Into an underground tunnel.

large_P1200574.jpglarge_P1200584.jpg

Back through the town

Another pee stop. Time for some Pomegranate juice & a shoe shine

P1200588.jpglarge_P1200609.jpg

That is a cotton field I think.

Another day over. This is hard work. every day a new spot. I like a bit of sea time and a breather.

Not for a few days yet.

Gallipoli next - that should be quiet ..
